•Birth: Raja Rammohan Roy was born on May 22, 1772, in Radhanagar, Bengal (now in West Bengal, India).

•Education: He received a traditional education in Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit, which later expanded to include English, Latin, and Greek.


2.Social and Religious Reforms:

•Brahmo Samaj: In 1828, Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj, a socio-religious reform movement that aimed to rid Hinduism of its many social evils, including idol worship, caste system, and superstitions.

•Abolition of Sati: One of his most significant achievements was his campaign against the practice of Sati, where widows were forced to immolate themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres. His efforts led to the abolition of Sati in 1829 by the British government.


3.Educational Contributions:

•Modern Education: Roy was a strong advocate for modern education, emphasizing the need for English and scientific education in India. He established the Hindu College (now Presidency University) in Kolkata in 1817, which became a premier institution for higher education.

 

4.Advocacy for Press Freedom:

•Journalism: He founded several newspapers, including the "Sambad Kaumudi" in Bengali and the "Mirat-ul-Akbar" in Persian, to promote social and political awareness. He was a staunch advocate for freedom of the press.


5.Political Activism:

•Reforms: Roy was deeply involved in political activities, advocating for administrative reforms and the rights of Indian people under British rule. He traveled to England in 1830 to present his case for these reforms directly to the British Parliament.


6.Death and Legacy:

•Death: Raja Rammohan Roy died on September 27, 1833, in Bristol, England.

•Legacy: His legacy continues to inspire generations of social reformers in India. His efforts laid the foundation for the Indian Renaissance and contributed significantly to the eventual Indian independence movement.


Raja Rammohan Roy's life and work remain a testament to the power of individual initiative in driving societal change. His contributions to social, religious, and educational reforms have had a lasting impact on Indian society.
